BombsAhoy's News

Posted by BombsAhoy - March 25th, 2021

Just making a news post to let you guys know that I probably won't be making many updates for the rest of March and most of April. I'm going to be recording a video series where I'm going to be drawing some OCs from some of my favorite artists on Newgrounds. These videos, along with the art, will be posted during the week leading up to Pico Day.

So, uh....Stay tuned lol?????

I've produced 97 pieces of art this year, so now, with the year drawing to a close, I'd like to take my top 10 favorite pieces and give each a little exhibition. As always, thank you to all my followers, and I hope you'll keep following me in the years to come. NOTE: The order I'm presenting these posts in doesn't denote their quality. I'm just presenting them in the order I happened to write them down in.

Two Naked Nymphs

This piece is part of my ever growing fascination and experimentation with using photomanipulation to create hyper detailed backgrounds. These backgrounds are things I could make otherwise just by looking at the photo and then drawing it by hand, but the point is more so related to expediency. As someone who currently works a day job and therefore, only has a limited number of hours to draw before having to go to bed (I have to get up at 2AM most days, by the way) it's become a growing concern of mine to finish drawings more quickly, but maintain a good level of quality. Having a preset photo to work with reduces time spent drawing, but always allows me to keep that high level of detail I love so much.

Just a Girl From Another Place in Time

Something I just drew on a whim, like many of the pieces in my gallery. I love the negative space in this picture, wherein the only occupant is the creature-girl's long horn. The glow casting the eerie shadows on her face, her blank glowing eyes, and the grainy filter I inserted over the picture, all come together to form a rather cool, yet somewhat unnerving image. To supplement the tone of the piece, I cracked my fingers and banged out this little description:

"In the dimension the door over, amongst a vast netherscape, lopes an elden race. Glittered horns and glowing eyes adorn features that could otherwise be excused as sapient, but a distinction is made in the powers they hold. They are not earthly vessels like us. Their abodes inhabit a more celestial plane."

The Last Defender

A character concept I've had in mind for some time now. In short, he's a warrior who is the guardian of this city, and one day, a great leviathan comes to the rim of the city's walls. In an effort to save his people, he engages the leviathan in battle and leads it away from the city. Their battle rages for the rest of the day and throughout the night. At dawn, the warrior stands triumphant. He stumbles back to his city and is horrified to find it in ruins with all the inhabitants dead. In his efforts to save his people, he only ended up leaving them exposed to another threat. A great burning rut had been brought up through the city and led out the other side. A trail. The warrior follows the trail and pursues his city's destroyers through the horror of the wastelands beyond his city's walls. The original incarnation, here, shows a more traditional knight/warrior. In more recent alterations, this character is more of a cybernetic warrior.

All that aside, I'm rather happy with the lighting on this one and the rendering was done with a square tipped brush (I've done a lot of experimenting this year). The orange skin he bears is a call back to the days before I started doing digital art and posting on this account. I primarily used markers in the past for a lot of my coloring and I didn't always have a good skin tone on hand, so instead I would just give my characters blue, red, green, etc. skin.

Anchors Away

The ship here was done using the same aforementioned photomanipulation technique in Two Naked Nymphs. Not wanting to color a boring grey ship, I decided to go with a blue-green palette with a contrasting pink sky. The colors all came together to form a kind of early morning collar palette. Just as I was experimenting with a square pen in The Last Defender, here, I used a spray tool to render the sailor. The wind streams, which I added in at the last second help to cement a sense of fun and adventure.

Hilda/Reggie X Neon Genesis Evangelion

A fun request I fulfilled from a drawthread (a thread wherein users request pieces involving whatever the subject matter is of the specific board) on /co/. I did a lot of these drawthread requests this year, primarily when I was in a rut and didn't know what I wanted to draw. Drawing for other people helped me produce a lot more art this year than I would have otherwise and it was always so nice to make someone happy.

I find the way their figures contrast against the bright yellow background to be very satisfying.

(I know nothing about either one of these characters.)

Reverse Bunnysuit Lilith

A fun little idea I had during Halloween. I tend to be the kind of guy who draws his women a little more...developed, but this time around I wanted to draw a flat chested girl. Given the Halloween spirit permeating the air at the time, I decided Lilith would fit the bill rather nicely as my muse for this piece. Rendering out her stockings was fun and I think the fog came out rather well.

Soobway

Once again, more practice with photomanipulation on this one. Just about everything in this picture was imported and edited from photos obtained online and some taken by myself. Have you ever seen such an aesthetically pleasing location for a Subway restaurant parody?

iu_215688_7280812.jpg

A Walk Through the Old Canals

Yes, you guessed it. MORE photomanipulation. The photos used in this piece were all actually taken by myself in different areas around my house and neighborhood. The canal itself ran between a row of houses. I had spotted it earlier that week while exploring on my bicycle. I got up early the next morning and went to photograph the scene. I love environments that give off the impression that they lead to somewhere else entirely. If I was to pick a number one favorite for this year, it would have to be this piece, dual-edged with the tones of serenity and curiosity. Almost nostalgic for no good reason.

I love the girl's wide-brimmed hat and her big red boots. iu_215690_7280812.jpg

Burning Sword II: Vanquished Evil

I really do like working in monochrome. It's simple and you can get away with just giving the impression of something without having to outline much of the detail. I personally find that a lot harder to get away with when it comes to working in color. The skulls were all imported photos (shocking I know).

This work is a sequel to another piece I did here. Both are in service to an album published by one of my family. This piece in particular is meant to represent a warrior who has just finished slaying a slew of terrible monsters. Now, she prays to her god(s), giving thanks for guidance in combat against these evil creatures. However, not everything is as it seems and the spirit of vengeance can still be felt emanating from the skulls to this very day. They are, perhaps, lying in wait somewhere in the great beyond, searching for some way back to ravage the mad maiden who sent them to an early grave.

iu_215691_7280812.jpg

Mountaintop Getaway

Need I say that the background was made using photos? No, I'm sure you've guessed that by now. If that annoys you, then you still have two big reasons to like this piece: The woman's beautiful eyes.

In all seriousness, I really love how this picture came out. The sun casting shadows about the woman's soft body, the enormity of her breasts, the cozy little red roofed cottage, and the woman's welcoming playful smile saying, "Come and lie with me for a while," all with the implication that it's just the two of you amidst a mountaintop resort.

And that's all for 2020! If you read all the way through this then I really appreciate it! If you're a stranger stumbling across this news posts, then head on over to my gallery here and if you like what you see, then consider giving me a follow. I try to upload as frequently as I can.

Happy New Year...
